Girardota ( Spanish: Girardota ) - a city and municipality in the north of Colombia , in the department of Antioquia . It is part of the Medellin metropolitan area.

Content
History
The settlement from which the city later grew was founded in 1620 . The municipality of Girardot was separated into a separate administrative unit in 1833 .
Geographical position
The city is located in the central part of the department, on the right bank of the Porse River, approximately 13 kilometers northeast of Medellin , the administrative center of the department. The absolute height is 1426 meters above sea level [1] .
The municipality of Hirardot borders on the north with the municipalities of San Pedro de los Milagros and Donmatias , in the east with the municipalities of Barbosa and San Vicente , in the south with the municipality of Guarne , in the west with the municipality of Copacabana . The area of the municipality is 78 km² [2] .
Population
According to the National Administrative Department of Statistics of Colombia, the total population of the city and municipality in 2012 was 50 573 people [3] . The dynamics of the population of the municipality by years:

According to the 2005 census, men made up 49% of the population of Hirardota, women - 51%, respectively. In racial terms, blacks , mulattoes and Raisals made up 73.4% of the city’s population; whites and mestizos - 26.6% [4] . The literacy rate among the entire population was 92.9%.
Economics
The basis of the Hirardot economy is agricultural production , as well as the manufacture of pottery and artificial fibers .
57.3% of the total number of urban and municipal enterprises are trade enterprises, 32.3% are service enterprises, 9.6% are industrial enterprises, 0.8% are enterprises of other sectors of the economy [4] .
Religion
The city is the center of the Catholic Diocese of Hirardota .
