The crater Garriot ( lat. Harriot ) is an ancient large impact crater in the northern hemisphere of the far side of the moon . The name was given in honor of the English astronomer , mathematician , ethnographer and translator Thomas Herriot (1560-1621); approved by the International Astronomical Union in 1970. The formation of the crater belongs to the Nectarian period [1] .

Crater Description
The crater's nearest neighbors are Szilard crater in the west, Somner crater in the north-west, Kantor crater in the north-northeast, Kidinnu crater in the east-northeast, Hogg crater in the east, Innes crater in the southeast, Seyfert crater in the south and the Espin crater in the southwest. In the north-north-west of the crater is a chain of craters Somner [3] . The selenographic coordinates of the center of the crater are , diameter 52.8 km [4] , depth 2.4 km [1] .
The crater is double; it is almost completely covered by the satellite crater Garriot B (see below), occupying three quarters of its area. The crater has a circular shape, during its existence it has been significantly destroyed, the crater shaft is smoothed by subsequent impacts . The average height of the crater shaft above the surrounding terrain is 1180 m [1] , the volume of the crater is approximately 2600 km ³ [1] . In the bowl of the satellite crater Garriot B there is a central peak.
