Daala is a free video compression format and reference video codec developed in Xiph.Org as an alternative to the HEVC (H.265) and VP9 formats [1] . Daala will use to eliminate block artifacts that often appear in other video compression standards that directly use the discrete cosine transform [2] . In June 2013, Chris Montgomery, founder of Xiph.org, stated that the goal of the Daala project would be more efficient compression than HEVC and VP9 [2] . Daala is sponsored by the Mozilla Foundation. The end of development is scheduled for 2015 [3] [4] .
As of the end of 2013, Daala is still far from practical application [5] .

History
On May 30, 2013, an alpha version of the Daala codec prototype was presented and video streaming using it [2] .
On June 20, 2013, Daala's description was published on the Xiph.Org Foundation [2] [6] [7] .
July 23, 2013 published the second part of the Daala description introducing the prediction in the frequency domain [8] .
On August 12, 2013, the third part of the description was published, explaining the switching between the time and frequency domains [9] .
On October 17, 2013, the fourth part was published describing the predictions of the Chroma / Luma channels in Daala [10] .
On September 1, 2015, Mozilla announced that the Open Media Alliance will use Daala's insights to develop a new licensed royalty free AOMedia Video 1 (AV1) video codec. [11] [12] [13]
Algorithm
The main macroblock compression algorithm is, unlike many existing standards, not just a combination of DCT followed by a deblocking filter, but one of the lapped transform options. In it, before the DCT encoding, an additional filter is applied that is inverse to the deblocking filter. As a result, the image compression efficiency is higher than that of DCT and wavelets [4] .
Daala also uses a different method for predicting block contents. In conventional codecs, only the nearest pixels from previously decoded blocks are used for prediction. Daala cannot use this approach, since there is no block division in lapped transform, therefore, prediction in the frequency domain is used. In particular, due to this, Daala handles images with periodic textures that are difficult for DCT [4] .
Experiments continue on the application of pyramidal vector quantization developed in the Opus project [4] .
