Jean-Joseph Rabearivelo ( Malaga Jean-Joseph Rabearivelo , born Jean-Casimir Rabearivelo; March 4, 1901 or 1903 - June 22, 1937 ) - Madagascan writer and translator.

Biography

He was the side son of a representative of Andrian , a pre-colonial nobility. Having left school early, he changed several jobs until he got a job at the local administration, and then at the publishing house. He was married, had five children, of which one daughter died early. Like his beloved cursed poets , Rabearivelu was a drunkard, a drug addict and a libertine.

In the last years of his life, the writer's relations with the colonial authorities deteriorated. In 1937, he was not included in the delegation traveling to the World Exhibition in Paris. According to G. Sh. Chkhartishvili , "a trip to France, a country that for Rabearivelu was a fabulous kingdom of great literature, seemed to the unfortunate poet the only chance of salvation, a breakthrough into a different, magical world." The disease (probably tuberculosis) joined this disappointment. In the same year, the writer was poisoned with potassium cyanide.

Creativity

The first periodical works printed by Rabearivelu were poems. In 1924, he published the first collection, The Bowl of Ashes, inspired by the spirit of decadence. In the collections of Sylphs and Books, he departs from symbolism, and since 1931 he has been fond of surrealism . The poet devoted much time to translations from Malgash folklore into French, and European lyrics to Malagasy.

Rabearivelu tried his hand at prose, his novels are devoted to the French colonization of the island.

In 1935, the poet wrote the libretto for the first national opera, Imaitsuanala.
