History

In the 9th century, the village of Kamen (Kamen) already existed here, occupying the territory between the modern streets of Zhomkovskaya and Podskarbinskaya. Then, near the village, new settlements appeared - Targov and Skaryshev. Two kings of Poland were elected on the Election Field in Kamen, in 1573 Henry III of Valois and in 1733 August III of Wettin . These lands, as well as the local church and parish belonged to the bishops of Plock, from whom in 1780 they were acquired by King Stanislav Augustus Poniatowski .

In the place where the church once stood, destroyed by the Protestant Swedes in 1656, now stands the Cathedral of Our Lady of Victory , built in 1929-1931 by the architect Konstantin Yakimovich. Next to the church is the Kamenkovsky Cemetery , the oldest in Warsaw and one of the oldest in Poland. It was founded in the XIII century and closed in 1887, after the opening of the Brudnovsky cemetery. It is also the only cemetery church in Warsaw. Here are the symbolic graves of the defenders of Warsaw in 1794 - the general and poet Yakub Yasinsky and Tadeusz Korsak .

On the facade of the cathedral there is a memorial plaque in memory of the Poles who died in the 17th century during the invasion of Poland by Swedish Protestants, during the uprising of Tadeusz Kosciuszko at the end of the 18th century and during the November uprising in the 19th century. There is also a memorial plaque in memory of Yakub Yasinsky.

The Old Believers' cemetery that existed in Kamenek was abolished after the Second World War , and all burials were transferred to the Orthodox cemetery in Volya. In 1889, Kamenek was incorporated into Warsaw.
