Biography
He was born on April 8 ( 21 ), 1906 in the city of Moscow in the family of the geologist Alexander Alexandrovich Chernov (1877-1963).
In 1924 he took part in one of the expeditions led by his father. Since then, almost every year (until 1984) he traveled to different areas of the Nenets okrug and the Komi Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic .
In the summer of 1930, when a geologist found coking, high-calorie coals on the Vorkuta River, a geologist. Coal mining has been going on since 1931. At the site of the discovered coal reserves , the working village of Rudnik was founded, later on the right bank of the Vorkuta River the Vorkuta settlement was later formed, which later became a city. To transport coal, a port was built on Pechora , at which the city of Naryan-Mar was formed .
The first scientist in the USSR to deal with the oil and gas potential of the Bolshezemelskaya tundra .
In 1940, an expedition led by geological engineer G. A. Chernov headed for the coast of the Khaipudyrskaya Bay ( Barents Sea ). A detailed geological survey was carried out here and the available information on the oil content of the Sinkin Nos region was checked. Thus began his long-standing struggle for oil on the Bolshezemelskaya tundra , as he called this period of his life and activity, which culminated in brilliant discoveries: gas in Naryan-Mar , oil deposits in the Kolva and Kharyaga regions, at the mouth of the Chernaya River and on the coast of the Barents Sea . In 1973, one of the promising structures prepared by geologists produced the first oil, the Usinskoye field , near which the city of Usinsk appeared.
He died on April 6, 2009 at 103 years of life in the city of St. Petersburg .

- Streets in Vorkuta, Ukhta , Naryan-Mar are named after G. A. Chernov.
- School No. 39 in Vorkuta is named after G. A. Chernov, and the Cherniv Readings conference is held there annually.
