Background

In 1507, Sheybani Khan conquering Maverannahr , overthrew the power of the last Timurid Babur , creating a centralized state. The following goals were to extend its power to Khorasan, Khorezm , Balkh . Hostile relations with the Safavids, Sheybani Khan has been since the time of his war with Babur, whose Safavids were an ally. All this was supported by religious differences, plans for the conquest of Khorasan, which the Safavids also claimed, prompting Sheibani Khan to start a war.

Battle

In 1510, Sheybani Khan was in Herat . At this time, Ismail I invaded Western Khorasan, freeing Mashhad and Tus, and began to rapidly move towards Herat. Sheibani Khan did not have a sufficiently strong army at hand, the bulk of the troops stood in Maverannahr, so he, after consulting with his emirs, hastened to hide behind the walls of Merv. Safavid troops captured Astrabad , Mashhad , as well as Serakhs . All Uzbek emirs who were in Khorasan, including Jan Wafa, fled from the Safavid-Kizylbash and arrived in Merv. Sheybani Khan sent a messenger to Ubaidullah Khan and Muhammad Timur Sultan for help. Meanwhile, Shah Ismail surrounded Merv and besieged him for some time, but he could not seize the city, in order to lure the khan out of the city, he resorted to a feigned retreat. Muhammad Sheybani Khan, without waiting for the 30,000th reinforcements to come to them, with five thousandth troops left the city and rushed to pursue the Shah, having been ambushed. Shah Ismail I built an army in the shape of a crescent moon, encircling the end on all sides of the enemy. At the battle of Merv in December 1510 (according to other sources, November 29, 1510), the army of Sheybani Khan was surrounded by the 17 thousandth army of Ismail and was defeated after fierce resistance. According to historical studies, many representatives of the Uzbek aristocracy and Sheybani Khan himself fell in battle.

Summary

After the death of Sheybani, power in Khorasan passed into the hands of the Safavids, and in Maverannahr Babur. Only thanks to the gifts of the nephew of Sheybani Khan of Ubaidulla Khan, the rule of the house of Sheybanids in Maveranahr was restored in 1512.
