Bakanas (translated from the Kazakh “dry channel”) is a small low-water river in the East Kazakhstan region of the Republic of Kazakhstan . The length is 240 km, the basin area is about 25 100 km [1] .

The river and its tributaries originate on the western slopes of the Chingiztau Ridge at the confluence of the Alpeis River and the Tolen River at an altitude of 808 m [2] , then flow in a southerly direction, lost in the sands of the Balkhash-Alakol depression near the border with the Almaty region.
Ice weather is observed from December to March. By early June, the river becomes shallower, in the lower third it dries out completely. Food mostly snow. Tributaries: Dagandeli, Alpeis, Tolen, Kyzylozen, Zhanibek, Balkybek, Koksala. The average annual water consumption (at A. Shubartau) is 3.27 m³ / s [3] . Used for irrigation and other household needs.
