Biography
Spyros Pisanis was born on the island of Corfu in the family of restorer Stefanos Pisanis, a Venetian by birth. His father was charged many times with the restoration of murals in the summer palace of Achillion and in the Municipal Theater of Corfu. Spyros Pisanis studied in Rome . The artist and art historian, Photos Giofilis, who studied at the Pisanis private school, in the period 1905-1907, writes in his History of the New Greek Art that Pisanis also studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts . Until 1905, beginning in 1900, Pisanis taught painting at the evening school of Corfu, which was subsidized by the Italian Ministry of Education. A student of Pisanis at that time was the Greek artist Epaminond Thomopoulos, who later became an academician. Spiros Pizanis was one of the artists who, together with Vincent Bocaciabus and Pericles Tsirigotis, brought Impressionism to Greece ... "through Italy". In 1907, Pizanis left Kerkyra for Smyrna , heading the directorate of a local Italian school, where he also taught painting and drawing. In Asia Minor, he remained until 1920. In 1920, he left Smyrna , with his family, and settled in Rome .
Works
“The art of Pisanis , writes F. Giofillis, was the most advanced among the artists around him of Corfu. His landscapes are full of atmosphere and light . ” And in the works in oil, and in watercolors of Pisanis, his interest in the color result is always manifested. In his work “Bunar”, as well as in the film “Sevdikoy Bridge”, the search for color is obvious. His Venetian watercolors, some of which are in the Municipal Gallery of Corfu, "keep the theme and matter fresh." The works of Pisanis today are scattered and exhibited, except for Corfu, in Smyrna , in Ankara , in Genoa and other cities. But most of them are in Rome , where he lived until the end of his life. Spyros Pisanis died in 1927 [2]
Family
Pisanis was married to his countrywoman Melpo, the daughter of the famous Greek artist Charalambos Pachis. His son, Vittorio Pisani, became a famous painter in Italy and for many years was an employee of the weekly La Tribuna illustrata , on whose covers he illustrated international events. One of his most famous works was the composition The sinking of the Austrian battleship Viribus Unitis , for which he received the prize of the Italian state.
