Sports career
He began training at the youth wrestling club Ylistaron Kilpa-Veljet.
Four times became the champion of Finland in Greco-Roman (1951, 1952, 1955 and 1957), and four times in freestyle wrestling (1953, 1954, 1955 and 1958). In 1952, at the Olympic Games in Helsinki, he won a silver medal in the weight category up to 79 kg according to the rules of Greco-Roman wrestling. In particular, he defeated the Soviet wrestler Nikolai Belov .
In 1953 he became the bronze medalist of the World Cup in Naples, during the tournament he defeated the future Olympic champion Branislav Simic of their Yugoslavia. After the failure in the world championship to the West German Karsruhe (1955) he stopped performing in the international arena, but in Finland he continued to fight until 1960.
His sons Pekka and Yucca also became international fighters. Yucca won a bronze medal at the Los Angeles Olympics (1984) lightweight.
