History

Volleyball appeared in Romania in 1919 in Bucharest . In 1931 the first national championship was held among men's , and in 1934 - among women's teams. The Romanian Basketball and Volleyball Federation was established in 1931 . In 1947, she was among the founders of the FIVB . In 1948 , the independent Romanian Volleyball Federation was created.

From September 21 to September 23, 1946, Romania hosted the first Balkan volleyball championship, which was attended by 4 men's and 3 women's national teams of the countries of the Balkan Peninsula. In the women's competition, the victory was won by the volleyball players of Romania, the victorious teams of Bulgaria and Yugoslavia .

In the official international competitions of the FIVB, the women's national team of Romania made its debut in September 1949 at the first European Championship . In the starting round on September 10, Romanian volleyball players defeated the Hungarian national team 3-1. After that, Romania won two more victories over the Netherlands and France and lost three times to the teams of Poland , the USSR and Czechoslovakia , taking the final 4th place.

Three years later, the Romanian national team was among the participants of the first women's world championship , held in Moscow , and became the 5th. At the next world championship in 1956, Romanian volleyball players won their first medals in competitions under the auspices of the FIVB, becoming the silver prize-winners of the tournament. During that championship, the Romanians won 8 victories and once lost to the USSR national team in a stubborn struggle with a score of 2: 3, and after two games played, the Romanian team led 2-0.

In the 1950s and 1970s, the Romanian women's team was one of the strongest national teams in the world. In 1963, she won bronze medals at the home European Championships , in 1964 she made her debut at the Tokyo Olympics , taking 4th place with two victories and three defeats, and in 1962 and 1974 she became 5th at the world championships.

Since the second half of the 1970s, the results of the Romanian national team began to decline. Since then, the team has never occupied high places in official international competitions of the FIVB and the EKB . The Romanians last participated in the Olympic volleyball tournaments in 1980 in Moscow , where they became the last (eighth). At the world championships after 1974, the Romanian national team participated only twice (in 1994 and 2002 ), but both times dropped out of the fight after the first group round. At the European Championships, the best achievement of the Romanian volleyball players over the past 38 years was the 4th place they took in 1989 .

In December 2013, on the eve of the decisive round of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup, the leadership of the Romanian volleyball decided to resign from the post of head coach of the country's national team, Marina Constantine, under whose leadership the Romanian team did not overcome the selection for the European Championship 2013 and could not win the Euroleague 2013 medals. The Argentinean specialist Guillermo Gallardo was appointed the new coach of the team [4] . Nevertheless, to get to the World Cup the Romanian national team did not help. In the decisive qualifying match, the Romanians lost to the Turkish national team on its field with a score of 0: 3.

The year 2015 also did not bring the Romanian national team any success. At the first European Games and at the European Championships, Romanian volleyball players dropped out of the struggle for high places after the group round.

In 2016, the Italian head coach David-Alessandro Delmati took over as head coach. The main tournament of the season for the national team of Romania was the qualification of Euro 2017 . In their qualifying group, the Romanians took 2nd place and could not directly qualify for the championship. In subsequent butt games against the national team of Hungary, Romanian volleyball players first beat their rivals in their field 3-0, and then were defeated 1: 3 on the road. The "Golden" set brought success to the Hungarians 15:13 and it was they who got a ticket to the European Championship . After this failure, Delmati resigned, and the post of head coach of the national team was taken by his assistant Madeline Angelaescu. Under her leadership, the national team could not overcome the qualification of the 2018 World Cup , losing in their group to the national teams of Turkey and Bulgaria.
