Biography
Born in the family of teacher Berend Dijkerhuis and his wife Gezina Erkes. He was the second child in a family of three. Dycksterhuis studied mathematics at the University of Groningen from 1911 to 1918 and headed his doctoral dissertation “A Contribution to the Knowledge of the Flat Helicoid” [6] . Since 1916 he worked as a teacher in a school led by his father, since 1932 he taught mathematics, physics and cosmography at Leiden , and then at the University of Amsterdam . He advocated changes in the teaching of mathematics and for strengthening the formal characteristics of this discipline. In 1952 he was elected a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences . In 1953 he was appointed teacher of the history of mathematics and science at Utrecht University , and in 1955 at Leiden University. In 1962 , Dijksterhuis was awarded the Sarton Medal Society of Historians of Science .
Personal life
He was married to Johann Niemeyer, a native of Groningen . Their marriage took place on December 27, 1920 in Haren [7] . Two sons and one daughter were born in the marriage [8] .
