31st Virginia Infantry Regiment

The 31st Virginia Infantry Regiment ( The 31th Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment ) is an infantry regiment recruited in Virginia for the Confederation Army during the American Civil War . He fought mainly as part of the Severovirdzhinskoy army and passed all the battles in the east of the battle of Cheat Mountain before the surrender of Appomattox .

Formation

The 31st Virginia was formed in the summer of 1861 and accepted into the army of the Confederation in July. His companies were recruited mainly in the districts of Marion , Pendleton and Gilmer . His first commander was Colonel Samuel Reynolds, Major - John Stringer Hoffman. (Hoffman enlisted in the regiment as a private of Company C in May, in June became a sergeant major, and in December - a major [1] )

Subsequently, they were commanded by William Jackson , cousin of General Thomas Jackson .

Battle Path

In July, the regiment was included in the brigade of Robert Garnett and under the command of William Jackson participated in the Battle of Rich Mountain . In September, he was consolidated into the brigade of Henry Jackson with the 23rd and 25th Virginia and 3rd Arkansas regiments, and participated in the battle at Chet Mountain.

In November, the 31st was listed in the Johnson Brigade and was sent with the entire brigade to strengthen the squad of Thomas Jackson , and as part of this squad he participated in an expedition to Romney . On December 13, Johnson's brigade participated in the Battle of Camp Elleny .

May 1, the regiment was reorganized. Major Hoffman became a colonel, Alfred Jackson became a lieutenant colonel, and Joseph Chenovit became a major. The Johnson Brigade (known as the "Northwest Army") was again transferred to the reinforcement of Dzhokosn and participated in the battle of McDowell on May 8 Together with Jackson, the regiment was transferred to the Shenandoa Valley and participated in the battles at Cross Case and at Port Republic.

In June, the regiment was included in the Arnold Elsie Brigade, who was wounded on June 8 and led by James Walker . As part of this brigade, the regiment was redeployed under Richmond and took part in the seven-day battle . The regiment fought at Gaines Mill and at Malvern Hill, after which it was transferred to Northern Virginia to take part in the North Virginia campaign .

On August 9, 1862, the regiment participated in the Battle of Cedar Hill, where Lieutenant Colonel Jackson was wounded, then fought at Bristo Station, and on August 28 - 30 participated in the second Battle of Bull Run . A few days later, the regiment was involved in Chantilly, and then the Maryland campaign and regiment (as part of the Jubal Airlie brigade) took part in the capture of Harpers Ferry, and on September 17, fought at Entity , where he participated in the attack on the Sedgwick federal division.

In December 1862, the regiment participated in the Battle of Fredericksburg, where he did not suffer significant losses.
