Description

Small dipterans insects, length from 1.25 to 1.80 mm; mostly taupe. The antennae is yellow. Fore coxae whitish-gray, apical yellow. 3-4th tergites of the abdomen with silver-gray patches on the black dorsum. Head with a shallow mouth. Hind tibia without large ventroapical spurous set. Maxillary tentacles apically yellow. The eyes are oval, large. On the face there is one row of lateral setae; fronto-orbital sets on the forehead are absent. Antennal grooves sharply delimited from ventral side. The cheeks are wide. The breast nopleopleuron is covered with microgrids in addition to two large bristles. Supraalar pre- and post-sutural setae, as well as acrostychal sets, are well developed. The lateral parts of the abdomen are almost without light (whitish-gray) patches: tergites 1–4 with a wide median brown stripe and an uneven lateral margin; the lateral silver-gray region is absent on them; fifth tergite trimmed at apex, mostly gray with a thin brown medial stripe. Wings are transparent, shiny [1] .

The species was first described in 2013 by the American dipterologist Wayne N. Mathis (Department of Entomology, Smithsonian Institution , Washington, DC , USA ) and the Polish entomologist Tadeusz Zatwarnicki, Department of Biosystematics, Opole University , Opole , Poland ) and named octogonum on the basis of the octagonal shape of the male epandrium. The taxon Hydrochasma octogonum is similar to the species of the Hydrochasma incisum Group , differing from them in the structure of the male genitalia (similar to the species Hydrochasma incisum , with which it is often confused in collections) [1] [2] .
