Ronald Andrew Whelan ( born Ronald Andrew Whelan ; September 25, 1961 , Dublin , Ireland ) is an Irish footballer known for playing for Liverpool and the Irish national team . Participant in the World Championships 1990 and 1994 , as well as the 1988 European Championship . Winner of the Champions Cup 1983/1984 as part of Liverpool.

Whelan's father is also a professional footballer known for playing for St Patricks Athletic . Younger brother Paul also played football in the Irish Premier League.

Club career
Ronnie began his career at the local Home Farm , where he made his debut in the Irish Premier League at the age of 16. In 1979, he converted to English Liverpool [1] . On September 19, Whelan made his debut in the English Premier League , at the age of 18. On April 3, 1981, in the match against Stoke City , he scored his first goal for the Reds. In his first season, Ronnie became the champion of England and then won the Premier League five more times. In the 1982/1983 season, he replaced Ray Kennedy who left the club and took his “5” number. Ronnie helped Liverpool win the League Cup by scoring two goals in the final against Tottenham Hotspur . In the 1983/1984 season, Whelan won the European Cup with the team. With Liverpool, Ronnie won many trophies, scoring a total of 73 goals in 493 matches in all competitions. Whelan is one of the team record holders.
In 1994, he moved to Southend United , where he ended his career two years later.
In 2017 , Ronnie Whelan expressed his dissatisfaction with the Liverpool club’s participation in the transfer market. The legendary member of the club explained his dissatisfaction with the fact that there are no newcomers playing football at a professional level. [2]
International Career
On April 29, 1981, Whelan made his debut for the Irish national team against Czechoslovakia . In 1988, he was included in the application for participation in the European Championship . At the tournament, Ronnie took part in matches against the teams of England [3] , the USSR [4] and the Netherlands [5] . In a duel against the Soviet Union, he scored a goal.
In 1990, Whelan traveled with the national team to the World Cup in Italy . In the tournament, Ronnie played in a match against the Netherlands team [6] . In 1994, he was included in the application of the national team for participation in the US World Cup . Whelan played in a meeting against the Norwegian national teams [7] .
