Biography

The main historical sources about the life of Romulf are the History of the Franks by Gregory of Tours [1] and the History of the Reims Church by Flodoard [2]

Romulf was the son of the Duke of Champagne Loup [3] . Nothing is known about the early years of his life, except that he had been a priest even before going to the episcopal department [4] .

In the middle of November 590 in Metz, at the local council of the hierarchs of the Frankish state, Bishop Aegidius, accused of high treason, was dismissed from the pulpit of Reims . Romulf [3] [4] was elected the successor to the meeting. Receiving episcopal dignity thanks to the patronage of the King of Australia, Hildebert II and his mother Brünnhilde , Romulf was one of their most active supporters. In this capacity, he maintained close ties with Grigory of Tours. It was probably at the request of the Bishop of Tour that many prisoners were released in Reims in 591 [5] [6] .

Romulf significantly increased the wealth of the Reims diocese, using for this a great inheritance inherited from his father. Flodoard reported that, even in his time, Romulf's testament compiled in 593 was kept in the archives. This document, attested by King Childebert II, transferred the personal lands of Romulf to the Reims Diocese, which were located south of the Loire River and in Poitou . Also this bishop made donations to the Soissons , Turs and some other dioceses [4] .

Romulf probably died at the end of 593, although some of the historians attribute to this bishop the construction of a chapel dedicated to St. Herman in 595. Sonnaty was elected the new Bishop of Reims [4] .
