After graduating from the Theresian Academy, he was an officer in the Austro-Hungarian army. He worked at the Imperial and Royal Institute for the training of teachers of physical education and fencing . In 1912, the institute sent a team of fencers to the Olympic Games in Stockholm , which performed under the flag of Austria; as part of this team, he won a silver medal in saber fencing. In addition, Richard Werderber won the bronze medal in the individual foil championship.
