He participated in hostilities in Flanders on the side of King Philip IV , ruled Savoy when his father was in the Italian campaign.
Having become a count, he was defeated by Gig VIII of Vienne at the Battle of Var (1325). In 1328 he distinguished himself in the Battle of Kassel, when he fought in the army of the French king Philip VI .
Edward allowed the Jews to settle, and abolished the charging for crimes. He gave many benefits and indulgences, whence his nickname Liberal.
On October 18, 1307, he married Blanca of Burgundy , daughter of Duke Robert II and Agnes of France . They had one child - the daughter Zhanna (1310–1344), who married the Duke of Brittany Jean III (1286–1341).
In 1320, Edward laid siege to Chateau-Neuf castle.
After the death of Edward, his daughter Jeanne presented her rights to the inheritance. However, the President of the States of General of Savoy, Archbishop Moutier-Tarentaise Bertrand, answered her that, according to the customs of the country, women never inherit a crown if there are men in the clan. As a result, Aimon was the earl, the younger brother of Edward.
