Platov Airport ( IATA : ROV , ICAO : URRP ) is the international airport of Rostov-on-Don , the successor of the old airport on Sholokhov Avenue . Located 29 kilometers north-east of Rostov-on-Don in the Aksai district of the Rostov region , 15 km north-west of the city of Novocherkassk (4 km north of the village of Grushevskaya , near the federal highway M-4 ). Named in honor of the Cossack ataman Matvey Platov .

The new Rostov airport was built in preparation for the 2018 World Cup [3] . The first large airport built in the modern history of Russia [4] , the third in terms of passenger traffic (after Sochi and Krasnodar) in the Southern Federal District [5] . For regular flights, the airport is open from December 7, 2017 [1] .
The airfield is approved for receiving Airbus A310 , Airbus A319 , Airbus A320 , Airbus A321, Airbus A330 , Boeing 737 , Boeing 747 , Boeing 757 , Boeing 767 , Boeing-777 , CRJ , An-124 , Il-62 , Il-76 , Tu-154 , Tu-204 and all the lighter, as well as all types of helicopters . The classification number of the runway ( PCN ) 57 / R / A / W / T [6] , the runway is equipped according to category II of ICAO [7] .
In February 2019, the airport received a rating of 5 stars according to the results of an audit conducted by experts from the authoritative international rating organization Skytrax ( United Kingdom ). The Russian airport has been awarded this rating for the first time since its existence since 1989 [8] [9] .
Title
Initially, the airport had the working title “Yuzhny”. In the course of a popular vote organized by the Government of the Rostov Region , the name “Platov” won, over 15.8 thousand votes (40%) , in honor of the Cossack ataman Matvey Platov . Other options - “Rostov-on-Don” and “Yuzhny” - scored more than 13 thousand and 11.6 thousand votes, respectively [10] [11] .
On January 20, 2017, the Government of the Russian Federation officially assigned the name “Platov” to the airport [12] .
History
Designing
The general design of the airport was carried out by Aeroproject , the design of the air terminal was done by the German company Assman Beraten + Planen [13] , and the architectural concept for it was the British bureau Twelve Architects and its architect Alex Beatus, who had previously participated in the design of the terminal 3 of Domodedovo Airport and Lahta Center towers in St. Petersburg . According to Alex Beatus, the concept was based on the River Don, its waves and bridges [14] .
Class B airport [15] is designed with a single runway with dimensions of 3,600 by 45 meters [16] and a passenger terminal with an area of 50,000 m², carrying capacity of 2 thousand passengers per hour and 5 million passengers per year, with 9 telescopes [17] and 10 exits to apron buses. The project also laid the possibility of building a second runway in parallel with the first on the other side of the terminal if such a need arises. In addition, the project of the terminal also reserved the possibility of its expansion in both directions with an increase in passenger traffic above 5 million people. Designed for use by most types of aircraft. In addition, the construction of a cargo terminal with an area of 5200 m² and parking for 2500 cars [18] was designed .
The development of interior design for business passengers was carried out by two architectural bureaus - Nefa Architects (hall of domestic linear lines, concept “Step”) and studio VOX Architects (hall of IAL, project “Sun. Air. Shores”).
Construction
The construction of the airport began in 2014 and was completed in July 2017, and the commissioning and transfer of all flights took place on the same day, December 7, 2017 [1] [19] . The construction project was included in the Federal program of preparation for the World Cup in 2018 , as well as in the Federal Target Program "Development of the Transport System of Russia (2010-2020)" [20] . The investor of the construction and the owner of the terminal was the holding “ Airports of the Regions ” (the project manager is Grigory Udintsev).

Performance Indicators
Record daily passenger traffic recorded June 23, 2018 during the World Cup 2018 [50] . On this day, 212 take-off and landing operations were performed. The maximum rate was reached, including landing at the Boeing 777 with 442 passengers on board, the first in the history of the landing airport double-deck Boeing 747, as well as 17 Airbus-319, 17 Airbus-320, 8 - Airbus-321, 11 - Boeing 737 -800.

During the first half of 2018, passenger traffic in a number of areas was: Ekaterinburg - 39 thousand passengers, Sochi - 29 thousand, Samara - 17.3 thousand, Antalya - 74 thousand, Tbilisi - 61.5 thousand people, Dubai - 17 thousand [55] . More than half of the transfer passengers in 2018 were passengers of the flight Tbilisi - Rostov-on-Don - Moscow, in second place - Tbilisi - Rostov-on-Don - Yekaterinburg.
In the first half of 2019, the most popular direct destinations were: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Simferopol, Yekaterinburg, Makhachkala, Nizhny Novgorod, Ufa, Samara, Kazan, Grozny, Novosibirsk. Passenger traffic of flights passing by Moscow increased by 15.7% compared with the first half of 2018 and amounted to 356.7 thousand passengers [56] .
In May 2019, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev visited the Platov airport as part of his working visit to the Rostov region - this is his first visit to the southern aerogavan [57] .

Аэропорт связан автодорогой с северным обходом Ростова-на-Дону и федеральной автодорогой М-4 «Дон» . Проектировщик ОАО «ГипродорНИИ» в 2013 году предоставил шесть вариантов трассировки автодороги. В итоге была выбрана трасса, которая пройдёт по территории Аксайского и Родионово-Несветайского районов с обходом посёлков Октябрьский и Красный , хуторов Каменный Брод и Камышеваха [65] , общая протяженность составляет 15 932,24 м. Участок от северного обхода до аэровокзала — 2-полосный с обочинами, рассчитанными на расширение до 4-х полос (расширение началось летом 2018 года). Участок от М-4 до аэровокзала — 4-полосный. Оба участка полностью освещённые. Построенные участки дорог одновременно сократили и сделали удобным маршрут с М-4 на Таганрог .
Расстояние по автомобильным дорогам до центров крупнейших городов Ростовской области: 26 км до Новочеркасска ; 40 км до Ростова-на-Дону ; 42 км до Шахт ; 46 км до Новошахтинска ; 50 км до Батайска ; 80 км до Азова ; 100 км до Таганрога .
Общественный транспорт к аэропорту представлен лишь 17-местными микроавтобусами (обычными маршрутками) № 285 и № 286:
- следование по маршруту № 285: Привокзальная площадь — Гвардейская площадь — улица Красноармейская — проспект Театральный — проспект Шолохова — трасса М-4 «Дон» — аэропорт Платов;
- следование по маршруту № 286: Сельмаш — улица Менжинского — улица Курчатова — улица Щербакова — Вятская улица — Орская улица — Щепкинское шоссе — аэропорт Платов [66] .
Рейсы выполняются круглосуточно, с интервалом 30 минут (каждые 00 и 30 минут часа). Время в дороге от железнодорожного вокзала Ростова-на-Дону (место отправления маршрутных такси) до аэропорта около одного часа.
C 2019 года из Ростова-на-Дону в аэропорт организован маршрут № 700, из Новочеркасска — маршрут № 800 [67] .
Ранее озвученные планы строительства железнодорожной ветки и запуска «Донского экспресса» [68] не подтвердились. Областной минтранс озвучил планы запуска электрички до аэропорта в 2035 году [69] .
