Description
Small two-winged insects, length from 1.50 to 2.30 mm; mostly taupe. The color of the antennae varies from yellow to gray. Yellow to golden brown mesonotum. Head strongly dilated ventrally. The hind tibia carries a large ventroapical spur-shaped set. The base of the male genital epandrium is almost the same width as its length. Head with a large mouth opening. Maxillary tentacles apically yellow. The eyes are oval, large. On the face there is one row of lateral setae; fronto-orbital sets on the forehead are absent. Antennal grooves sharply delimited from ventral side. The cheeks are wide. The breast nopleopleuron is covered with microgrids in addition to two large bristles. Supraalar pre- and post-sutural setae, as well as acrostychal sets, are well developed. The lateral parts of the abdomen are almost without light (whitish-gray) patches: tergites 1–4 with a wide median brown stripe and uneven lateral margin; the lateral silver-gray region is absent on them; fifth tergite trimmed at apex, mostly gray with a thin brown medial stripe. Wings are transparent, shiny [1] .
The species was first described in 2013 by the American dipterologist Wayne N. Mathis (Department of Entomology, Smithsonian Institution , Washington, DC , USA ) and the Polish entomologist Tadeusz Zatwarnicki, Department of Biosystematics, Opole University , Opole , Poland ) and is named in memory of H. B. Williams (Ms Hollis Barton Williams ), who provided technical support to the authors for almost 35 years and died on August 23, 2009. The taxon Hydrochasma williamsae is similar to the species of the Hydrochasma faciale group, differing from them in the structure of the male genitalia (including the shorter epandrium) [1] [2] .
