History

On the square at the beginning of the 20th century. In the future, the urban dominant is seen - the New Cathedral

It appeared at the end of the 19th century on the site of the dismantled fortifications of the Horned Fortress , when an area of about 10,000 square meters, originally allotted for the central city park according to the general plan of the city, remained free from buildings and green spaces. The area, divided into two parts by Tsarskaya Street ( Finnish. Keisarinkatu , now Vyborg), has been used since the beginning of the 20th century for sporting and special events of nearby schools: the classical lyceum , the real lyceum , the Finnish joint school , as well as the nautical and trade school . It received the name “School Field” ( Finnish. Koulukenttä , that is, a school stadium; on the Russian map of 1915 the name of the square is designated as “Square for Sports”).

In the future, the area, stretching to the present Morskaya Naberezhnaya street , also began to be used for official city events (holidays, parades, processions and shows). For example, in 1918 and in 1938, a military parade was hosted by General K. G. Mannerheim . And at the end of the Soviet-Finnish war (1939-1940) , at a parade of Soviet troops in May 1940, M. I. Kalinin , Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR , presented state awards to distinguished soldiers, as evidenced by a memorial plaque on the facade of the former lyceum, as well as a new name - Heroes Square (since 1941).

In 1939, the city architect Ragnar Yupuya a concert hall building was designed in the northern part of the square, but military events prevented the construction and the project remained on paper.

During the post-war reconstruction of Vyborg, the appearance of the square repeatedly changed. On the part of the territory between Vyborgskaya and Krepostnaya streets, a square was laid out, which since 1947 was called Suvorovskaya Square. On the site where it was previously planned to build a concert hall, a bust of IV Stalin (1951-1953), a monument to Maxim Gorky (1953-1957) and a monument to M. I. Kalinin (1957-2010) were successively erected on a granite pedestal in the middle of the square.
