The general parliamentary elections in Italy in 1929 were held on April 6 . They were elected 535 members of the Chamber of Deputies of the Kingdom of Italy . By the time the elections were held, the situation in Italy had changed dramatically. All political parties, with the exception of the ruling National Fascist Party, were banned in 1926 . After the parliamentary reform of 1928, the elections were held in the form of a plebiscite , during which voters were asked to vote for or against the list of candidates for the only party, the National Fascist. In the event that the majority of the voters would refuse to approve the list proposed by the Fascist Great Council , a second vote would have to be taken on another list. [one]

The voting procedure was designed so that voters could not be absolutely sure that the secrecy of the vote would be respected, although formally the law guaranteed confidentiality. Not surprisingly, 98.43% of voters approved the list of candidates for the Great Fascist Council. [2]
Despite the fact that the 1929 elections were the first in the history of Italy in which women could vote, [3] the number of people who had the right to vote did not increase, but rather decreased to 9 638 859 people, despite the fact that the population of Italy at that time exceeded 40 million. The reason for this was that only members of trade unions or industry associations, people in active service in the armed forces , and also clergy were allowed to participate in the elections. 8,661,820 people took part in the vote, so the turnout was 89.86%, which was about 40% more than in the previous elections.
