Biography
Born on December 19 (31), 1853 in the village of Ukhor of the Pronsky district of the Ryazan province [1] in the family of a rural deacon - he was the eldest of children. He received his elementary education from his maternal grandfather, clergyman and public teacher Nikolai Kirillovich Tolpin, then he graduated from the Skopinsky Theological School, Ryazan Theological Seminary (with a gold medal), Moscow Theological Academy (1880 ).
He began to teach in Yekaterinoslav, and since 1883 - in the Ryazan Theological Seminary .
Since 1884, he was a member of the Ryazan Scientific Archival Commission (RUAC), since 1894 he was the permanent editor of her “Works” [3] , and since 1905 - the chairman of the commission. At the same time, he still taught history at the Ryazan Mariinsky Gymnasium, the Diocesan School, and the private schools of Zelyatrov and Ekimetskaya . Later, Yakhontov was invited to become a full member of the historical organizations of the capital: the Archaeological Institute , the Moscow Military Historical Society , the Society of Lovers of Natural History, Anthropology and Ethnography . He participated in the development of the project of archival reform, which was of national importance.
In the post-revolutionary period, 1917-1929, he was in charge of the Ryazan Archive and at the same time was the director of the Ryazan Museum of Local Lore. In fact, Yakhontov was the creator of both the archive and the museum; During these years, a maximum of archival affairs and museum exhibits was collected, many articles on local history were written. The formation of scientific local history continued until the persecution of representatives of the old intelligentsia, local historians, teachers, museum workers: on the night of December 13, 1929, S. D. Yakhontov was taken to Ryazan prison. Four months later he was released under “home surveillance” by the OGPU , having been barred from working for six years in the organs of the Central Archive. Excommunicated from scientific work, Yakhontov managed to write voluminous and extremely interesting memoirs [4] : 15 thick notebooks, in fact - books that, unpublished, are still stored in his personal fund in the archive.
S. D. Yakhontov was buried in the old Ryazan cemetery: in the same place where his wife and children - one of his sons died early from childhood illness, the other died in the First World War.
In memory of Yakhontov, the Yakhontov Readings have been held in Ryazan since 2000 [5] .
