He fought almost exclusively as part of the North Virginia Army , as one of the regiments of the Stone Wall Brigade .

The 27th Virginia was formed in May 1861. His companies were recruited in the districts of Elleni, Rockbridge , Monroe, Greenbrier and Ohio. The regiment consisted of eight companies and became part of the " Stone Wall Brigade ", which included the teams of Thomas Jackson , Richard Garnett , Winder, Elisha Paxton , John Walker and William Terry. The first commander of the regiment was a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, Colonel John Echols .
In the summer of 1862, the regiment was involved in the first battle of Bull Run , where it defended a key position - Henry Hill.
