According to the US Census Bureau, the area of ​​the community is 173.2 km², of which land is 173.2 km² and water surface is 0 km². Located in the De Long Mountains, at the western end of the Brooks Range , 140 km north of the city of Kotzebue and 89 km from the coast of the Chukchi Sea .

According to the 2000 census, the population of the statistically isolated area was 32 people ^[3] . Racial composition: Native Americans - 65.62%; white - 31.25%; representatives of two or more races - 3.12%. The proportion of people under the age of 18 is 18.8%; persons over 65 years old - 0%. The average age of the population is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 700 males; for every 100 females age 18 and over, 700 males.

The economy of Red Dog Mine is based on the extraction of zinc and lead . The development of the Red Dog mine began in 1987, after exploration showed the presence of a rich deposit of metal ores ^{[4] [5]} . The mine is the world's largest zinc producer and has the world's largest zinc reserves ^{[6] [7]} . The Red Dog mine accounts for about 10% of world zinc production ^[8] .

With the exception of the navigation period of 100 days, the only means of communication with Red Dog Mine is aviation. Air traffic is carried out through Red Dog Airport. A 84 km long road connects a statistically isolated area with a port on the shores of the Chukchi Sea.
