Eseta, Carlos

Carlos Basilio Eseta ( Spanish: Carlos Basilio Ezeta June 14, 1852 , San Salvador , Salvador - March 21, 1903 , Mazatlan , Mexico ) - Salvadoran military and political leader, President of El Salvador from June 22, 1890 to June 10, 1894 . He took this post after the overthrow of Francisco Menendez Valdivieso as a result of a coup.

Biography

In 1867 he entered the military academy.

In 1871, he was drafted into the army as the second lieutenant . He took part in clashes with Honduras in 1872 and 1873 , was wounded.

In 1875 he moved to Costa Rica , in 1876 he returned to El Salvador, then he traveled to the United States and Guatemala .

He returned to Salvador in 1885 . He took part in the Battle of the city of Chalchuapa ( Spanish: Batalla de Chalchuapa ) (in this battle, the President of Guatemala, General Justo Rufino Barrios Aujon ).

During the reign of President Francisco Menendez Valdivieso Carlos Eseta was commander of the suppression of the uprising in Kohuttepek ( 1889 ).

The last post before the coup is the Inspector General of the Army.

On June 22, 1890, Carlos Eseta overthrew Francisco Menendez Valdivieso and was proclaimed interim president of El Salvador, and his brother Antonio Eseta - interim vice president. After the election, from March 1, 1891, Carlos Eseta officially became president, and Antonio Eseta became vice president of El Salvador.

As president, Carlos Eseta founded a military hospital in San Salvador, opened a school for non-commissioned officers and, with the help of a German military mission, carried out artillery reform and organized the training of artillerymen. During his reign, there was a war with Guatemala, the so-called Totopost War ( Spanish: Guerra del Totoposte ). This name arose because the President of Guatemala, General Manuel Lisandro Barillas Bercian, pushed troops to the border, but there was no fighting, and thus the war was reduced to the supply of corn biscuits to the army ( Spanish totoposte ) [1] . The war ended in August 1890 with the signing of a peace treaty beneficial for El Salvador, concluded with the active assistance of the diplomatic corps accredited in both countries. On August 28, 1892, a mint was opened in El Salvador, which on October 1, 1892, put into circulation the temporary currency of El Salvador, the Salvadoran Colon. The initial exchange rate was two columns for one US dollar .

The President of El Salvador Carlos Eseta and his brother, Vice President General Antonio Eseta were overthrown as a result of the Forty-Four Revolution ( Spanish Revolución de los 44 ). Carlos Eseta went into exile in the city of Mazatlan in Mexico, where he spent the rest of his life.
