Serdyuk’s rifle anti-tank grenade of 1941 (VPGS-41) is a Soviet rifle grenade from the Great Patriotic War . It was produced in 1941-1942 as an anti-tank weapon , but due to its low qualities and insecurity, the design was not widely used and was replaced by hand - held anti - tank grenades .

History
Grenade launchers after the First World War disappeared - it turned out that the shank when fired damages the inner surface of the barrel, so that the rifle becomes unsuitable for firing. In the future, they occasionally appeared only as an ersatz weapon. This happened in the case of VPGS-41. It was adopted at a critical moment of the war (October 13, 1941), and already in the spring of 1942 its production was discontinued due to the large number of accidents. The grenade was the forerunner of the famous Faustpatron , but the unsuccessful fuse mechanics combined with the sensitive detonator with detonating mercury did not leave a chance. [1] [2] .
Design
Gun grenade refers to the type of "ramrod grenades." The grenade had a “tail” corresponding to the diameter of the barrel bore of a standard Mosin army rifle . A cylinder stabilizer was attached to the ramrod. A grenade of a cumulative type , however, without a significantly protruding fairing cap (it later turned out that detonation is best done at a distance from the target approximately equal to the diameter of the body), which gave it very modest penetration characteristics: up to 30-40 mm. Throwing a grenade from a rifle was made a blank cartridge and had significant advantages compared to a hand grenade. The flight range for a single target (presumably the size of a tank) is up to 60 meters, for group targets up to 140 m. There have been attempts to modify the grenade to "universal" by placing several layers of thin tape with notches in the hull. A grenade could be used as a hand grenade if, instead of a ramrod, an UZRG fuse was screwed into the head. The grenade has five main parts - the head, inertial-type impact mechanism , fuse ( detonator capsule ), ramrod and stabilizer . Explosive charge - 334 grams of pressed TNT . The total length of the grenade assembly 455 mm, weight - 678 g.
