In 1808 - the year after the founding of the Izhevsk arms factory - at the initiative of its founder Deryabin , an ensemble of hospital buildings was created on the southern slope of one of the main hills of the future Izhevsk. Hence the first name of the square - Hospital. After 40 years, due to the fire, the factory hospital fell into complete decline, and in 1887 it was finally closed. The remaining dilapidated corps were adapted for an artillery warehouse.

After that, the former Hospital Square began to turn into a new market square with a specialization in hay trade. Hence its second name is Haymarket (or Haymarket) [2] . On Sennaya Square there were no merchant sheds or shops. Trade went directly from carts. The subjects of trade were mainly agricultural goods: livestock, poultry, feed, various equipment - rockers, troughs, bast baskets, whips, etc.

Since 1912, under the leadership of the Izhevsk Agricultural Society, annual exhibitions of agricultural achievement have been held.

There was also a pavilion specialized in building materials, and in 1913 an arms shop was opened.

December 13, 1918 the area became known as Freedom Square. Meetings and demonstrations began to be held on it.

By the decision of the Executive Committee of the City Council on October 7, 1920, in connection with the holding of the first football match in Izhevsk , the square was called Sports Square [1] . Due to the fact that henceforth such events were held here extremely rarely, this name died out by itself.

In 1929, by decision of the City Council, the Central Market returned to Sennaya Square. Since the early 1950s, new buildings began to appear on the Haymarket. In 1967, the central pavilion was built.
