Alaya-vijnana ( Skt. Ālaya - house, dwelling; vijñāna - cognition) [1] - “accumulated consciousness” [2] , “root consciousness” ( mula-vijnana ) [3] ; the concept of the Buddhist philosophical school of yogachara , or vijnanavada , meaning the universal fundamental principle of the mind, consciousness ( vijnana ), therefore, in accordance with the subjective-idealistic [4] doctrine of the school ( citta-matra , “only the mind”), and of reality as a whole , including the so-called "external" objects [5] . Alai-vijnana as a single primary source of consciousness and the illusory “external” world can be compared with the Atman , however, in contrast to it, it is not a constant absolute , but rather, like an ever-changing stream of states [4] .
Alai-vijnana is a storehouse (“treasury”) of particles, or “seeds” ( bija ) [6] , arising as “imprints” of previous experience and transformed under the influence of karma into the other seven types of vijnana, that is, into five sensory perceptions, mental consciousness ( manovijnjanu ) and false consciousness of “ego” ( klishtamanovjnjanu ). These types of consciousness construct the “reality” of the phenomenal individual, his beginningless and endless degeneration, in which it is impossible to determine whether the perception of the scarlet-vijna “prints” ( vasan ) is primary or their projection “outside” is primary. Moreover, on the one hand, the alai-vijnana is “different” for each creature [3] , on the other hand, its nature is common to all individuals [6] . After reaching the state of bodhi (awakening), the "seeds" do not disappear, but their transformation into karmic consequences ceases.
The concept of alai-vijnana, often identified with umitta, has a fairly broad and indefinite character, ranging from the identification of alai-vijnana with a higher true reality called tathata (“suchness”), to understanding it as the totality of all psychic manifestations, the “stream of consciousness " [5] .
