Thomas William "Tom" Courtney ( born Thomas "Tom" William Courtney , born August 17, 1933 , New Ark, New Jersey ) is an American athlete, two-time Olympic champion in 1956.

Sports career and achievements
He won competitions organized by AAU several times. He won two gold medals at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia (800 and 4x400 meters). One of them was literally torn out in a tense and spectacular duel with Derek Johnson, an athlete from the UK. Courtney holds a world record of 1: 46.8 in a run of 880 yards (805 meters), set May 24, 1957.
