Biography
Nicolae Vlad was born on November 1, 1963 in Piska, Galati County. He began weightlifting at the age of 14. In 1982 and 1983, he became the bronze medalist of the European Junior Championships.
In the national team of Romania he made his debut in 1984 at the European Championship in Vitoria , where he took 4th place. A few months later, he won the gold medal of the Los Angeles Olympic Games . This victory of the young and little-known athlete at that time became possible due to the fact that the then dominant athletes of the USSR , Bulgaria and some other socialist countries did not participate in the Los Angeles Olympics.
In 1985, Nicolae Vlad moved from light heavy to heavy weight category, where he quickly gained a leading position in Europe and the world. In 1985, he won the European Championship and the bronze medal of the World Championship , and in 1986 he became the best in both the European Championship and the World Championship . In the next two years, his main rival was the Soviet athlete Pavel Kuznetsov , to whom he lost at the World Championships in Ostrava (1987) and the Olympic Games in Seoul (1988) .
In 1990, Nicolae Vlad was again able to win the world title, however, in general, the Olympic cycle did not work out for him, and he took only fourth place at the Olympic Games in Barcelona (1992) .
After moving to Australia for several years, he received the right to represent this country at international competitions and in 1994 became the winner of the Commonwealth Games and the silver medalist of the World Cup . However, he later returned to Romania and, under the Romanian flag, participated in the Olympic Games in Atlanta (1996) , where he won a bronze medal.
In 1996, he completed his sports career and began coaching. He was the coach of the Romanian team at the Sydney Olympic Games (2000) [1] . In 2001, he was elected President of the Romanian Weightlifting Federation, and in 2004, Vice-President of the Romanian National Olympic Committee [2] . For many years, is part of the leadership of the European [3] and International Weightlifting Federation [4] . In 2006, he was included in the Weightlifting Hall of Fame [5] .
