Her original name is Muniadona (or Muniadona). According to some reports, Sancho III the Great renamed her to Munia Major, since she was the eldest in the family and she had an aunt with the same name of Munyadon.
Munia Major was the daughter of Count Sancho Garcia of Castile . Her marriage to Sancho III made her the Queen of Navarre. The wedding took place in 1016 and allowed Sancho III to establish friendly relations with Castile . In 1017, after the death of Count Sancho Garcia of Castile, Sancho III became regent under the young Count Garcia Sanchez , brother of Munia.
However, good neighborly relations between Castile, Navarre and Leon deteriorated in 1027 after the assassination of Count Garcia Sanchez. He was engaged to Sancha, the daughter of Alfonso V Leon , who, for signing the marriage contract, wanted to receive Castilian lands between the rivers Cea and Pisuerha. Garcia Sanchez, arriving in Leon for a wedding, was killed by the sons of the nobleman Vega, whom he expelled from his lands.
Sancho III, who opposed this wedding and subsequent Leon expansion, was given occasion to start a war with the Kingdom of Leon in connection with the murder of Garcia Sanchez. As the count's son-in-law, he immediately occupied Castile and launched a full-scale war with Alfonso's heir, Bermudo III . The combined forces of Navarra and Castile quickly captured most of the kingdom of Bermudo III. By March 1033, the kingdom of Sancho III extended from Zamora to Barcelona .
Munia Major was the mother of four sons and, possibly, two daughters:
- Garcia III of Navarre
- Ferdinand I the Great , founder of the Castilian royal house
- Ramiro
- Gonzalo Sanchez (Earl of Sobrarbe)
- Bernardo
- Jimena, wife of Bermudo III Leon
- Major, wife of Pons, Count of Toulouse
