He is known as the publisher of a number of previously unknown texts that he discovered while serving first in the Ambrosian and then in the Vatican libraries . Often the texts with which he worked were hidden in palimpsests and he used gallic acid to detect them. In particular, an extensive fragment of Cicero's treatise on the state was discovered in this way.

Biography
Angelo Mai was born into a modest family in Skilpario , currently part of the province of Bergamo , Lombardy . In 1799, he joined the Society of Jesus and in 1804 became a teacher of classical languages in Naples . After completing his education at the College of Rome , he lived for some time in Orvieto , where he was engaged in teaching and paleontological research. Although he then returned to Rome , the deteriorating relationship of the apostolic throne with Napoleonic France and the subsequent occupation of Rome by General in 1808 forced May to move to Milan , where in 1813 he became the keeper of the Ambrosian library.
There, he devoted all his energy to the study of manuscripts entrusted to him, and over the next six years he was able to return to the world a large number of previously considered lost works. After leaving the company of Jesus, he accepted the invitation to take a similar post at the Vatican Library. In 1833, he was appointed Secretary of the Congregation for the Propaganda of Faith . February 12, 1838 he became a cardinal.
Angelo May died in Castel Gandolfo on September 8, 1854.
