Bottom mines are used in areas of limited depth for their protection or blockade. Mines of this type are designed to destroy submarines and surface ships ( vessels ) in areas difficult to access for mining with a developed anti-submarine defense system. [one]

Design History
The development of the SMDM self-transporting mine was carried out by the Marine Underwater Weapon-Hydropribor Concern .
This mine is in service with the Russian Navy and is used to defend or block areas with depths of up to 120 meters.
Design
The SMDM self-transporting sea bottom mine consists of 4 compartments:
- Combat charging compartment;
- Instrumentation module;
- Reservoir part;
- Aft.
The charging compartment is equipped with a 500 kg explosive charge.
And the instrument-and-instrument module (also used in MDM mines) is a functionally complete unit equipped with a 3-channel combined fuse with an acousto - electromagnetic- hydrodynamic principle of action, which responds to the acoustic, electromagnetic and hydrodynamic [2] fields of the target ship and urgent devices [ 3] , multiplicity [4] and elimination [5] .
The reservoir part includes tanks with oxygen , kerosene and sea water .
The aft part consists of a heat engine , a steering machine and a tail section with 2 screws and rudders of direction and depth.
Principle of Operation
The SMDM self-transporting sea mine is an alloy of a thermal torpedo with a bottom mine as a warhead , which is fired from a torpedo tube of a submarine or from a surface ship. After firing and passing the distance, a self-transporting sea mine lies on the ground in a predetermined area inaccessible to submarines with a developed anti - aircraft defense system and at the required depth. SMDM on the ground begins to work like a regular bottom mine of the MDM type.

- ↑ Long-term electronic liquidator (DEL) - a device designed to eliminate a mine after a specified service life is a clockwork with a magnetic regulator and electronic winding, which, after working out the set time, closes the contacts that provide current to either the ignition device, a special flooding device mines. The time of operation of the DEL is calculated from the moment a mine enters a combat position. The liquidation period is set from 1 to 360 days. with a resolution of 1 day.
