Biography
He began to engage in wrestling in 1957, in Szombathely . After 10 years of study, he was noticed by breeders from the metropolitan club Vashash, and moved there. In 1968 he became the silver medalist of the Hungarian freestyle wrestling championship.
In 1971 he became the champion of the country in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, went to the world championship, where he won the world title.
At the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, he fought in the category of up to 82 kilograms ( average weight ). The elimination of the tournament took place as penalties accumulated. No penalty points were awarded for a clean victory, 0.5 penalty points were awarded for a victory for a clear advantage, 1 penalty point for a victory for a point, 2 or 2.5 penalty points for a tie, 3 points for a defeat, 3 clear loss for a victory , 5 points, a clear defeat - 4 points. If a wrestler scored 6 or more penalty points, he was eliminated from the tournament. The title was disputed by 20 people. Chaba Khegedyush, having won in five meetings, became the champion of the Olympiad. The wrestler’s gold medal became Hungary’s hundredth gold medal at the Olympic Games.

In 1973 he had a car accident, received life-threatening injuries. Only in 1975 was he able to return to full training.
In 1975, he was only fourth at the World Cup. In 1976 he won the European title.
At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, he fought in the category of up to 90 kilograms ( average weight ). The tournament regulations remained the same. The title was disputed by 17 athletes. Having lost twice, Chaba Hegedyush left the tournament.

In 1977, he became a two-time European champion; at the World Cup, he remained only fourth. In 1978, he remained eighth at the World and European Championships and in 1979 left the big sport.
In 1974 he graduated from college of physical education, entered the university at the law faculty, which he graduated in 1979. In the same year, he became the national team coach, was in this post until 1989. In 1985 he received the title of Honored Coach of Hungary. In 1989 he became vice-president of the Hungarian wrestling federation, in 1992 he became president of the federation, was re-elected four times (1996, 2001, 2005, 2010). In 1996, he ran for president of the European Wrestling Federation, but to no avail. From 1998 to 2002, he was a member of the FILA Audit Committee. In 1997-1998 he was the executive director of a commercial company, for some time was the editor of the TeleSport channel. In 2002, he tried to get into the Hungarian National Assembly , but the attempt was unsuccessful. At the Beijing Olympics, he was in a group of technical inspectors.
Married father-in-law and mother-in-law Chaba Khegedyusha, Imre Sinkovic and Katalin Gombos were famous actors in Hungary. The brother of Miklos Hegedyush, also a fighter, participant in the 1972 Olympic Games.
Honorary Citizen of Szombathely and Sharvar.
