MDM-1 is a sea bottom mine for active covert and defensive mine deployments from 533 mm submarine torpedo tubes or from surface ships .
Bottom mines are used in areas of limited depth for their protection or blockade. Mines of this type are designed to destroy submarines and surface ships ( vessels ) of any displacement . [one]

Design History
The development of the MDM type mine was carried out by the Marine Underwater Weapons-Hydropribor Concern .
This mine is in service with the Russian Navy and is used to defend or block areas with depths of up to 120 meters.
Design
The MDM type sea bottom mine is equipped with an explosive charge , a 3-channel combined fuse with an acoustic - electromagnetic - hydrodynamic principle of action that responds to the acoustic , electromagnetic and hydrodynamic [2] fields of the target ship , as well as urgent devices [3] , multiplicity [4] and elimination [5] .
Principle of Operation
The MDM-1 mine is placed from a torpedo tube of a submarine or from surface ships in shallow coastal areas with depths of up to 120 meters. After the landmines are brought down to the ground, the established urgency and multiplicity programs begin to work, which protect it from being turned out by modern contactless trawls [6] and provide protection from natural interference. After practicing these programs, the mine is put into combat condition. When a surface ship or submarine enters the zone of operation of a 3-channel mine receiver, it reacts to the acoustic , electromagnetic and hydrodynamic fields of the target with the successive operation of each fuse channel and undermining the warhead of the mine exactly under the bottom of the target ship . If the mine lay on the position for the set time until its elimination (1 year) - it is automatically destroyed.
Modifications
- MDM-1 mod. 1 - the basic model is installed from torpedo tubes of submarines and with NK to destroy surface ships (NK) of all types and submarines (submarines) in surface and underwater positions.
- MDM-2 mod.1 - the basic model is installed from aircraft and with NK to defeat NK of all types and submarines in surface and underwater positions.
- MDM-3 mod. 1 - a smaller model is installed from aircraft and with NK to destroy small displacement ships of all types and landing and landing equipment .
- MDM-5 mod.1 - an enlarged model is installed from aircraft and with NK to defeat NK of all types and submarines in surface and underwater positions.
Notes
- ↑ Concern Marine underwater weapon-Hydropribor. Military products.
- ↑ The hydrodynamic field of the ship (GPC) is the area of space adjacent to the ship in which there is a change in hydrostatic pressure caused by the movement of the ship. In physical essence, this disturbance by a moving ship of the natural hydrodynamic field of the World Ocean depends on the displacement, main dimensions, hull shape, speed of the ship, and also on the depth of the sea (distance to the bottom of the ship).
- ↑ An autonomous or special mechanism of a non-contact fuse of a sea mine, which ensures bringing it into combat state after a certain time (from several hours to several months) after setting. The urgency device is widely used to make trawling difficult.
- ↑ Anti-contact device of a non-contact mine, creating idle fuses of a fuse circuit when non-contact trawls, mine breakers or ships (vessels) pass over or near a mine and ensuring that a mine explodes from the physical fields of a ship or trawl only after working out a predetermined (set in the device multiplicity) the number of their passes (multiplicity). Some devices of multiplicity allow installation from 0 to 80 multiplicities. It is used to hinder trawling.
- ↑ Long-term electronic liquidator (DEL) - a device designed to eliminate a mine after a specified service life is a clockwork with a magnetic regulator and electronic winding, which, after working out the set time, closes the contacts that provide current to either the ignition device, a special flooding device mines. The time of operation of the DEL is calculated from the moment a mine enters a combat position. The liquidation period is set from 1 to 360 days. with a resolution of 1 day.
- ↑ trawling of non-contact mines using trawls that generate energy similar to the energy of the physical fields of a ship (ship), causing the operation of these mines.
