Life
Isabella was the daughter of Louis IX of France and Margarita of Provence . Wanting to make peace with Navarre, Louis IX gave Isabella for Theobaldo II of Navarre . Written evidence has survived that the preparation for the wedding was carried out personally by Louis IX , which was unusual for that time - mothers traditionally did this. On April 6, 1255, in Melena, the Archbishop of Rouen married Isabella and Theobaldo II of Navarre, Count of Champagne . The groom was 18, the bride - 13 years old.
It is generally accepted that the royal couple remained childless, but later Spanish chronicles indicated that Isabella and Theobaldo lost their only child in infancy around 1258 . An even later chronicler mentioned that Isabella died in 1271 , shortly after Theobaldo ’s death “siendo prenada” - “being pregnant” (probably during childbirth). Modern research suggests that the marriage of Isabella and Theobaldo was "white" (chaste): the couple did not undress completely before bedtime, and when Isabella died during childbirth, she ordered the midwives to wrap her body so that no one could see her nakedness .
Together with her husband and father, the devout Isabella went to the Eighth Crusade in July 1270 . Louis IX died of illness on this campaign in August of that year, and Theobaldo died in Sicily in December. After the death of her father and husband, Isabella returned to France and lived in Provence two more months before her death.
Isabella is buried with her husband in Provence .
