29 athletes came to the start, representing teams of the DSO (Voluntary Sports Society) and departments: Dynamo, Armed Forces, Spartak, Petrel, Kalev, Science, Harvest, Labor. The USSR Championship was the last competition in the selection system for the team to participate in the 1954 World Cup in Budapest Hungary

The International Pentathlon Federation since 1953 has officially introduced a new scoring system. This system is still in use. If earlier the winner was determined by the amount of places occupied by the athlete in each type of pentathlon, now in each form points were awarded for a specific result. This system gave an objective assessment of the strength of the athlete.

  • In the equestrian cross-country race 1000 points were given for the clear passage of the route in the established standard time. For errors (fell or zakidka) and for every second delay penalty points were removed. And for the advance of the timeline points were added.
  • In fencing, in order to gain a base amount of 1000 points, you had to win 75% of the meetings.
  • Shooting: 1000 points knock out 194 out of 200. For each additional point on the target, 22 points were added or shot. So with 100% result (200) the amount could be 11132 points.
  • Swimming: a distance of 300 meters must swim for 3 minutes. 54 sec. - 1000 points. For every second, 8 points were added or deducted.
  • Running: nominative 14 min. −1000 points. For each second, 3 points were deducted or added.

Summary

Since 1953, domestic competition began to be held on a new scoring system. However, the leadership of the Federation of the USSR for some reason decided to hold the USSR Championship according to the old rules, which caused an inexplicable confusion among athletes and coaches.

As a result, Igor Novikov won first place on points, but in terms of the total number of places he won the silver medal, losing the championship to Pavel Rakityansky.

In the team championship the first place was taken by Dynamo athletes.
