Story
Poor Maria Lotti, who served as a saleswoman in a women's clothing store, received a message from the New York notary about the death of her grandfather Joseph Lotti. “The old man could not leave me anything, he was very poor,” she assured Andre, her only friend. A gang of thieves "Brothers of Darkness" also received the same message with great details and rushed to take the necessary measures. The persecution began. One of the members of the gang met with Maria. The young girl became attached to him with all her pure heart, but her happiness was short-lived: a member of the gang soon leaves Maria.
Heartbroken, disappointed girl falls into poverty. Barely moving her legs, she wanders around the city and meets with an accomplice of the gang of "Brothers of Darkness" old Teresa. Theresa persuades the girl to enter the corps de ballet of the Green Tavern, the owner of which was the chieftain of the gang. From this day began a difficult life for Mary, full of painful experiences. Andre, who lost track of Mary and sought oblivion in entertainment, once quite by chance meets Mary in the Green Tavern. He persuades her to run away, as Codon, the entrepreneur Variete, decided to destroy Mary due to the fact that the gang received a notice that a letter from the New York notary about the upcoming transfer of Maria Lotti to the property was in mailbox No. 565 on Mera Street.
A box robbery plan was organized. Meanwhile, Maria and Andre fled. They had to endure many difficulties and dangers, but at the last moment, when a misunderstanding arose between Colon and Theresa, the latter served the fugitives. Theresa, in revenge, sent Colon police in the wake of the gang and thus saved Andre from death. He found Mary, and they fled together. Pursued by the hotel servants, they, by a lucky chance, got into the robbers' postal car of mailbox No. 565, got acquainted with the letter of a notary and, leaving the van, were saved by rail. The gang of the “Brothers of Darkness” was covered, but did not give up, and, having blown up its castle, died. Maria and Andre took over the inheritance and were no longer parted.
