Väisälä Crater ( lat. Väisälä ) is a small impact crater on the Aristarchus Plateau in the Ocean of Storms on the visible side of the Moon . The name was given in honor of the Finnish astronomer , optician and geodesist Irie Väisälä (1891-1971) and approved by the International Astronomical Union in 1973.

Crater Description
Vyaysala Crater is located in the center of the Aristarchus Plateau in the Ocean of Storms . The closest neighbors of the crater are Freud Crater in the west; craters Aloha and Nielsen in the northwest; Toscanelli crater in the north, Van Bisbrook and Krieger craters in the northeast, remains of Prince Crater in the east, Aristarchus crater in the south and Herodotus crater in the southwest. The surroundings of Vyaysal crater abound with interesting structures - in the west is the Schroeter valley ; in the north-west - the peak of Herodotus and the mountains of Agricola ; in the north-north-west, northeast and south - the furrows of Aristarchus ; in the north - the ledge of Toscanelli ; in the east - the furrows of the Prince and Mount Harbinger [1] . Selenographic coordinates of the center of the crater , diameter 8.1 km [2] , depth 1.53 km [3] .
The crater has a bowl shape, the albedo of the crater is much higher than the surrounding area, which is typical for most young craters. The average shaft height is 300 m [4] , the volume of the crater is approximately 20 km³ [4] . According to morphological characteristics, the crater belongs to the ALC type (according to the name of a typical representative of this type - Al-Battani Crater C ). Vyaysala crater is included in the list of craters with a bright ray system of the Association of Lunar and Planetary Astronomy (ALPO) [5] .
Prior to its renaming in 1973, the crater was called the satellite crater Aristarchus A.
