Corvette Description

Sailing corvette , according to information from various sources, ranged from 34.5 to 34.6 meters , width - 9.3 meters , and draft - 4.1 meters . The ship's armament was 18 8-pound cast-iron cannons, one 8-pound carronade , one 3-pound copper cannon, and one 3-pound copper falconet [1] [2] .

Service history

The corvette "Orest" was laid in Nikolaev on December 29, 1835 and, after launching on October 31, 1836 , became part of the Black Sea Fleet of Russia . The construction was conducted by the shipmaster A. S. Akimov [1] .

He went into practical voyages to the Black Sea in 1837, 1843, 1844 and 1847. In 1838, he was at the disposal of the Russian envoy in Greece . From 1839 to 1841 and from 1848 to 1853 as part of the detachments he took part in operations off the coast of the Caucasus . On May 3, 1839, as part of the squadron of Vice-Admiral M. P. Lazarev, he took part in the landing of troops of Lieutenant-General N. N. Raevsky at the mouth of the Subashi River [3] .

He took part in the Crimean War . In 1854 he joined the squadron of protection of the Sevastopol raid, was at the entrance to the raid. In September of the same year, the corvette "Orest" was flooded in a raid in Sevastopol [1] [2] . After the war, when clearing the Sevastopol Bay on March 14, 1859, the vessel was raised and donated to the Kherson cloister [4] .
