Iwatsuki (Principality)

The Principality of Iwatsuki ( 岩 槻 藩 Iwatsuki Khan ) is a feudal principality ( khan ) in Japan of the Edo period ( 1590 - 1871 ), in the Musashi province of the Tokaido region on the island of Honshu (part of modern Saitama Prefecture ).

A Brief History

  • 1623-1681 - from 45 to 115,000 coca of rice

The first ruler of Iwatsuki Khan ( Musashi Province ) in 1590 was Koriki Kiyonaga (1530-1608), a vassal of Tokugawa Ieyasu . In 1600, he was succeeded by the grandson of Koriki Tadafusa (1584-1656), the son of Koriki Masanaga (1558-1599). In 1616, Koriki Tadafusa received a land allotment to Hamamatsu ( Totomi Province).

In 1620, Iwatsuki Khan with an income of 55,000 Koku was acquired by Aoyama Tadatoshi (1578–1643), the former daimyo of Edosaki Khan . In 1623 he was transferred to Otaki Khan ( Kazusa Province). In the same year, Abe Masatsugu (1569-1647), who had previously been the ruler of the Principality of Odawar, was appointed ruler of Iwatsuki Khan. The descendants of Abe Masatsugu ruled in the khan until 1681 .

In 1681 - 1682, the Principality of Iwatsuki was ruled by Takura Shigetane (1641-1705), transferred there from Kurasuyama-khan ( Shimotsuke province). In 1682, Takura Shigetane was taken over by Sakaki Khan ( Shinano Province ).

In 1682, Iwatsuki Khan was transferred to Tod Tadamas (1632–1699), the former ruler of Tomioka Khan . In 1686 he was transferred to Sakura Khan ( Shimos Province). In 1686 - 1697, the principality was ruled by Matsudaira Tadatika (1661-1728), who had previously ruled in Kameyama Khan ( Tamba province). In 1697, he obtained possession of the Izushi domain in the province of Tajima .

In 1697, the Principality of Iwatsuki was taken over by Ogasawara Nagashige (1650-1732), who had previously ruled in Yoshida Khan ( Mikawa Province ). In 1710, Nagashige transferred power to his second son Nagahiro (1690-1752). The following 1711, Ogasawara Nagahiro was transferred from Iwatsuki Khan to the principality of Kakegawa ( Totomi Province).

In 1711, Iwatsuki Khan was taken over by Nagai Naohiro (1664-1711), who ruled earlier in Iiyama Khan ( Shinano Province ). In the same year after the death of Naohiro, he was succeeded by the son of Naohiro (1697-1714). In 1714, the third daimyo of Iwatsuki Khan was Nagai Naonobu (1698-1763), the younger brother and successor of Naohir. In 1756, Nagai Naonobu was transferred to Kano Khan ( Mino province).

From 1756 to 1871, the Ook clan ruled in the principality of Iwatsuki. The first ruler was Ooka Tadamitsu (1709-1760), transferred there from Katsuura Khan ( Kazusa province). The 8th (last) daimyo of Iwatsuki Khan Ook Tadatsura (1847-1920), who ruled from 1866 to 1869 , during the War of Bosin was on the side of the imperial government against the Tokugawa Shogunate , then was appointed peer and viscount (shishaku).

Iwatsuki Khan was liquidated in 1871 .
