Historians Christopher Dickman and Saulius Suzhedelis write that information about Klimaitis itself is extremely scarce [2] .
After the German attack on the USSR, Lithuanian nationalists proclaimed the Provisional Government of Lithuania , headed by J. Ambrazevičius .
Klimaitis created a paramilitary group (about 600 people), which took part in the battles against Soviet troops for Kaunas . Already on June 23, 1941 , Kaunas was in the hands of the rebels [3] . Its formation, however, was not subject to the Provisional Government [4] . On June 25-26, 1941, the Klimaitis unit began pogroms against the Jews . By June 28, 1941 , according to SS brigadeführer Franz Walter Stalecker , 3,800 Jews in Kaunas were killed at the hands of Klimaitis subordinates, and later another 1,200 in other cities [3] .
After the war, Klimaitis lived in exile. His whereabouts were unknown for a long time; in the 1980s he was discovered in Hamburg ( Germany ). The local prosecutor's office began preparing charges against Klimaitis, he died in 1988 [5] [6] .
