Biography
Born in the village of Kologreevo, Orel region. In 1994, he graduated from school in the village of Oktyabrsky, Belgorod District, Belgorod Region , in 1997 - Belgorod Pedagogical College . The work of the school teacher of physical education was interrupted by a draft in the army in November of that year [1] .
“ Training ” took place in Omsk , after serving in the 247th Guards Airborne Assault Caucasus Cossack Regiment of the 7th Guards Airborne Division , which is deployed in the city of Stavropol , and in February 1999 was sent on a business trip to Dagestan [1] .
After the invasion of militants in Dagestan , the group began to make reconnaissance exits to the rear of the enemy. One of them took place on August 22, 1999. The group of captain Igor Khomenko was discovered after completing the assignment; the commander ordered the fighters to retreat, left to cover, and Yuri Chumak voluntarily stayed with him. The captain died, Yuri, fighting off, tried to take out his body, but was surrounded and died [1] .
For courage and heroism, by decree of the President of the Russian Federation of October 27, 1999, Igor Khomenko and Yuri Chumak were posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Russia [1] .
Yuri is buried in the village of Oktyabrsky, Belgorod region, Belgorod region.
Memory
The school in which the Hero studied, bears his name, Belgorod Pedagogical College erected a memorial plaque and a monument. In Belgorod, a hand-to-hand combat tournament is held annually in memory of Yuri Chumak.
