History

The airfield was built in the 30s of the XX century for military purposes. During World War II, the Luftwaffe military aviation was based at the airport. From 1946 to 1968, the Debrecen airfield also functioned as a backup airfield for the Budapest airport. After the war ended, until 1991, the USSR Air Force aviation was based at the airport:

  • management and headquarters of the 1st Guards Bomber Aviation Division from January 1952 to July 1953 [2] ;
  • 654th Guards Bomber Aviation, Czestochowa Red Banner Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky Regiment [2] ;
  • management and headquarters of the 8th Guards Bomber Aviation Division from July 1953 to August 1960 [3]
  • The 674th Guards Bomber Aviation Vistula Red Banner Regiment on the Il-28 between July 1953 and August 1960 [3] .
  • The 880th Guards Bomber Aviation Vistula Order of Suvorov and Bogdan Khmelnitsky Regiment on the Il-28 during the period from July 1953 to August 1960 [3] ;
  • The 727th Guards Bomber Aviation Cherkasy Order of the Bogdan Khmelnitsky Regiment from August 1960 to July 10, 1987 on the aircraft Il-28, Yak-28 (1969 - 1982), Su-24M (02.1982 - 07/10/1987), brought to the Kirovograd airfield [3] .

In May 1991, Soviet troops handed over the base to the Hungarian government, and in 1994 a civilian reconstruction plan was adopted for the airport. Since the end of 2001, domestic commercial flights have been carried out, since 2002 it has been open for international flights. In 2004, a customs and border checkpoint was built, which completed the transformation of the airport into a full-fledged international one.
