Life

Sancha was the only surviving child of King Alfonso VII of Castile and his second wife, Ryxa of Silesia - the daughter of Prince Prince of Poland Vladislav II the Exile .

On January 18, 1174, Sancha married King Alphonse II of Aragon in Zaragoza and bore him eight children.

Sancha patronized the troubadours , in particular, Giraud de Canalçon and Pierre Raymond.

Soon after the wedding, Sancha entered into a legal dispute with her husband over the lands that were part of her dowry. In 1177, she invaded the county of Ribagors and occupied several villages and fortresses belonging to the crown.

After the death of her husband in Perpignan in 1196, Sancho was pushed aside by her son Pedro , and she retired to the monastery for the noble ladies of Santa Maria de Sichen, founded by her. There she took the vow of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem . Until 1208, the early widowed daughter Constance of Aragon , who later married Emperor Frederick II, took care of the Queen Mother. Soon she died, at the age of fifty-four, and was buried in front of the altar of the monastery in Villanueva de Sichen .
