Meadow foxtail

Foxtail meadow ( Latin: Alopecúrus praténsis ) is a species of herbaceous plants of the genus Foxtail ( Alopecurus ) of the Cereals family , or Bluegrass ( Poaceae ).

Botanical Description

Perennial grassy loose-leaf plants, (30) 50-120 cm tall. The rhizome is short. The leaves are linear, flat, green, sharp-rough, 4-10 mm wide. The vagina is smooth, flattened. Reeds are membranous, bluntly chopped, 1-2.5 mm long.

The common inflorescence is a cylindrical panicle , 3-10 cm long and 6-9 mm wide. Spikelets are elliptical, single-flowered, 4.5-5.5 (6) mm long, collected 3-4 by pressed branches. Spikelet scales are pubescent. Lower floral scales with spine. Three stamens ; anthers yellow, 2.5-3.2 mm long.

Flowering in June; fruiting in July.
