Recuperator accelerator

Accelerator-recuperator ( from Latin recuperator - receiving back, returning) ( English ERL, energy-recovery linac ) - a resonant linear accelerator in which an electron beam passes the accelerating structure twice: first accelerating, and then making a revolution along the magnetic track and returning to the structure in the “wrong phase”, slowing down. As a result, the beam transfers the acquired energy back: energy recovery takes place.

In some accelerator-recuperators, the beam can make not one but several revolutions, including along different magnetic tracks, according to the principle of the microtron .

Application

Basically, functioning and designed accelerator-recuperators are considered for creating free electron lasers . The use of recuperators for electronic cooling of high-energy ion beams and for creating electron-ion colliders is also discussed. The advantage of the accelerator-recuperator over the synchrotron is the possibility of obtaining ultra-small emittances .
