Petr Yulevich Schmidt ( December 23, 1872 , St. Petersburg - November 25, 1949 Leningrad ) is a Russian and Soviet zoologist , ichthyologist . [2]

Biography
Pyotr Yulievich Schmidt received a secondary education at the KI May gymnasium , a higher education at the natural department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of St. Petersburg University , which he graduated in 1895. He worked in the laboratory of Professor V.M. Shimkevich and V.T. Shevyakov . From 1877 he was an assistant at the Department of Zoology of the St. Petersburg Higher Women's Courses . He traveled in Semirechie , in the north of Russia, and in 1899-1902. and 1908–1910 in the Far East, participated in the Kamchatka Expedition F. P. Ryabushinsky, where he headed the zoological department. [3] . In 1906 he was awarded the award of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society with a gold medal named after Peter Petrovich Semenov [4] .

In 1914-1931, he simultaneously worked in the Zoological Museum of the USSR Academy of Sciences .
In 1938, together with a group of employees of the Zoological Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences P. Yu. Schmidt was arrested by the NKVD bodies because they had non-Russian surnames. [5] P. Yu. Schmidt was involved in espionage in favor of Germany and Japan on the grounds that he was on scientific missions in Berlin and Tokyo. After interrogation , during which a 66-year-old professor got his teeth knocked out, P. Yu. Schmidt signed the protocol, as required by the NKVD investigators, and added that he was also an Italian spy, as his daughter lives in Italy. [6] /. In the end, P. Yu. Schmidt was released and was able to continue his scientific activities. [5] .
In the years 1930-1949 - Scientific Secretary of the Pacific Committee of the USSR Academy of Sciences .
Contribution to science
Until 1900, the scientific interests of P.Yu. Schmidt were located in the areas of study of arthropods , systematics of spiders , the morphology of lower centipedes and the invertebrate fauna of Semirechye . While still in university, he received a gold medal for the study of centipedes [7] .
The works of P.Yu. Schmidt performed after 1900, when he began to study the fish fauna of the Pacific and ichthyology more generally.
P. Yu. Schmidt was the first to observe anabiosis in earthworms , which occurred during their drying. [8] [9] Translated the works of K. Keller , K. Kuhn and others. Under the direction of P.Yu. Schmidt published the Small Biological Encyclopedia (1924).

In the name of P. Yu. Schmidt, several species of fish of the northern part of the Pacific Ocean are named:
- Salvelinus schmidti - Schmidt's nosed loach .
- Lepidion schmidti is a large-headed lepidion of Schmidt.
- Leuroglossus schmidti is the Far Eastern silverfish Schmidt, numerous in the North Pacific.
- Lycogrammoides schmidti - Schmidt slyegolov, area - Sea of Okhotsk .
- Eumicrotremus schmidti - Schmidt's prickly circular claw, range - Sea of Okhotsk.
- Anisogammaruss schmidti - a representative of various legged crustaceans from the arid zone of the eastern coast of Kamchatka is also named after P. Yu. Schmidt.
- The mountain range on the island of Urup in the Kuril ridge is named after Peter Schmidt.
