Parliamentary and municipal elections in Mauritania were held on November 19 (1st round) and December 3 (2nd round) 2006 . [1] [2] In the election, 95 deputies of the National Assembly and members of about 200 local councils were elected. [3]

Context
In the 2006 parliamentary elections, 28 political parties participated. Islamist parties were banned, but many Islamists were nominated as independent candidates.
Many of the approximately 600 non-partisan candidates represented in the elections formed the National Independent Movement. Many members of the movement were formerly members of the Democratic and Social Republican Party , which was ruling under President Mawuyya Ould Sidi Ahmed Taya . [four]
